Modern Opera (1900 - )

The Modern Opera (1900 - ) collection features 11 exclusive filmed performances from the 20th century to present day, from leading European opera houses including Opera North, Teatro La Fenice and Teatro Real. Highlights from this collection include Martin Duncan's production of The Adventures of Pinocchio (Opera North, 2008) and Teatro Real's 2005 production of Torroba's Luisa Fernanda.

This collection includes:

  • The world premiere of the full and original version of Merlin by Isaac Albéniz, over a century after he completed the work. For this stunning production, director John Dew created a world of magic and fantasy, using evocative sets and splendid lighting.
  • The 2008 Venezia Teatro La Fenice performance of Puccini's La Rondine, which The Times called a 'vibrant production', and commended Graham Vick's direction 'on Peter J. Davison's stunning set'.
  • An inspired production of Giacomo Puccini's lighthearted love story, La Rondine, set to the libretto by Giuseppe Adami, with director Adam Vick and conductor Carlo Rizzi at the helm. This lively adaptation stars Fiorenza Cedolins in the role of Magda.
