He took a keen interest in cinema and began experimenting with film-making soon after he arrived. In 1969 Peter Tammer moved into the shop and dwelling next door to Paul's studio in Punt Rd. Peter had started making low-budget 16mm films in 1963. A strong friendship developed in which each person influenced the other. Peter was a strong admirer of Paul's photographs while Paul was attracted to experimental side of Peter's film-making, including the films of his circle of friends such as Jim Wilson and many others who were instrumental in setting up the Melbourne Filmmakers' Co-op. After some years in which each produced a number of 16mm film productions Paul graduated to his first 35mm feature film \u201cInside Looking Out\u201d in 1977. The cinematography of this film was shared between Peter and Brian Gracey, a colleague of Paul's teaching Photography at Prahran Technical College. Paul's career as a film director really took off after the film \u201cLonely Hearts\u201d enjoyed a mainstream release and critical acclaim.
